Learning resources

The Willow Works is an excellent site to use for a range of learning activities.  The facilities are ideal are to use as a base for offering training programmes and workshops.  The building itself and the surrounding gardens offer a multitude of educational opportunities.

Environmental Activities at The Willow Works

The local history group has been heavily involved in developing resources based on the heritage of the local area.  In some instances, members of the group may also be available to assist teachers and trainers.  Through the Heritage Lottery-funded Trent Vale landscape Partnership a number of educational packs have been prepared for teachers to download use.

This resource provides information and activity ideas for both adults and school children alike.  It encourages the discovery and learning of the history of The Willow Works and the surrounding area.

Comparing habitats

This activity can be used with children aged 5 and upwards. The activity can be made more technical for advanced students. Included are advanced notes and activity suggestions.

Finding shapes

This activity is intended for very young children to look at shapes that occur in the natural world.  The pack includes teachers’ notes and data collection sheets.

Population estimation

Suitable for key stage 4 students and upwards, this is over two sessions. The activity uses the woodlouse as a species for study. A presentation and student notes are included.

Ecological succession

This resource is aimed more at secondary school students.  The activity requires measurement, recording and species identification.  Included are students and teachers’ notes and recording sheets.

Owl pellets

This activity is suitable for junior school children and upwards. Pellets are provided for dissection and findings will be added to existing records to document how small mammal fauna is changing as the surrounding habitat develops. A presentation and information sheet is provided.

Biodiversity activities

Practical activities, a presentation and activity sheet to encourage understanding of biodiversity in the local environment.  Acitvities are aimed at children from age 5 upwards.  Notes for teachers are also included.

Homing snails

Aimed at older junior school children, this activity should be carried out over two sessions. The pack includes student notes and a data collection sheet.
